3:35 Commonwealth Cup
LOPE Y FERNANDEZ 5/1 generally – 1 POINT WIN
The Commonwealth Cup is run over 6f so you can add another furlong on in these conditions. LOPE Y FERNANDEZ is a horse who I have a lot of time for and I really don’t think we have seen the best of him. He was 3rd to Pinatubo in last years Chesham Stakes and back in 3rd that day was Highland Chief who just went and won todays first race, franking the form. LOPE Y FERNANDEZ was then dropped to 6f for a group 3 at Curragh which he won very easily before contesting the group 1 Middle Park Stakes. He came home 6th of 8 that day and to me looked a horse who wanted 7f – 1m. He reappeared as a 3 year old in the Irish 2000 guineas where he came there travelling strongly but Siskin stormed down the outside, with our selection coming home in 3rd. That form looks rock solid and LOPE Y FERNANDEZ is down to 6f here. I don’t think it is his best trip but I also don’t think it will be run like a normal 6f race which means it will play to his strengths. The ground will be no problem as he is by Lope De Vega who we have said this week, produces horses who like cut in the ground. Ryan Moore takes the ride and he has chose this over 4 other O’Brien horses. WIN.
4:40 Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes
JOHNNY DRAMA 14/1 generally – 0.75 POINTS E/W (5 places, 1/5 odds)
JOHNNY DRAMA has stall 20 to overcome but I have seen him switch from a wide draw before and get a prominent position. He will have to make the same move that Fujaira Prince made yesterday to make sure he is not stuck behind a wall of horses. We have Joshua Bryan in the saddle who claims 3lb and although he is not as experienced, I have been impressed with what I have seen of the youngster to date. He has had 3 winners away from Ascot in the last 4 days which tells its own story. JOHNNY DRAMA as mentioned above has a high knee action and absolutely loves soft ground. His form is solid and included a 2nd to Forest Of Dean in the Sky Bet Handicap last year. That form looks very good given that Forest Of Dean is now rated 109 by the handicapper. JOHNNY DRAMA looks well handicapped on 99 and the 3lb claim will bring him down to 96. I think this horse has more to come this season especially now stepped up in trip and the 14/1 on offer is decent value.
