A great start to the Newmarket July Festival as we came away with two winners, Al Suhail and Al Aasy.
Here is what we sent to customers yesterday:
1:50 Newmarket
AL SUHAIL 5/1 generally – 1 POINT WIN
Lots of potential improving types in this race but I can’t snub the 5/1 available about AL SUHAIL, a horse who is proven at this level. He has run in two Group 3s, finishing 3rd and 2nd as a two year old. He was very good on his penultimate start at Newmarket last October, when 2nd to Military March, with the pair pulling 7 lengths clear of good horses in horse like Molatham. AL SUHAIL was then sent to the 2000 guineas and although he came home near last place, I can’t help but think he is better than that showing. Any rain that has fallen will help his chances as he ran well on it last season. William Buick is back in the saddle and he was riding him all last season, so knows him well. If the rain does get into the ground, this horse stays a bit further so I would expect him to be staying all the way to the line. I also feel a smaller field like this race, is where he will be at his best. WIN.
2:25 Newmarket
AL AASY 5/2 generally – 1.5 POINTS WIN
Rain is forecast tonight and tomorrow and given AL AASY is by Sea The Stars, that is only going to enhance his chances. He showed how much he loved soft ground on his last start when pulverising a field by 10 lengths. He is up in trip and class here but he never came off the bridle over 1m 4f, on soft ground last time out and if he was pushed out to the line, he would have won by 20 lengths. I think this horse has the potential to be a very strong stayer who could possibly be lining up in next year’s gold cup. WIN.

CHRISTOPHER WOOD 9/1 generally – 1 POINT E/W (5 places, 1/5 odds)
CHRISTOPHER WOOD looks very interesting here for trainer Paul Nicholls. Normally you associate Nicholls with the best of the best over the jumps so when he lines one up in a handicap, carrying bottom weight of 8st 6lb, with his daughter Megan Nicholls claiming 3lb which brings the weight down to 8st 3lb, you simply take note. This is a National Hunt horse who has won 3 races on soft ground so he is going to be one of the very few horses in this race, whose optimum conditions is soft ground. He comes here on the back of a win last month at Pontefract and although he is up in class, the handicap mark looks very appealing. He is rated 143 over hurdles so you would expect he is capable of running to 95 – 100 on the flat. With 5 places on offer the price is too big to ignore. E/W.
