POMELO 9/4 generally – 1.5 POINTS WIN
I don’t normally get involved in 2 year old races but if I do, it is with very good reason. POMELO is a 2 year old who has been in my notebook since winning at Newbury on her debut, 6 weeks ago. She won by an easy 5 lengths under a hands and heels ride by Harry Bentley. The jockey’s comments after the race were what went into my notebook and that was ”She didn’t come out of 3rd gear”. If she was winning like that in 3rd gear then she has to be a horse of the highest grade. I also picked up on the trainers comments which were ”we are in no rush with her and something like the Prestige (today’s race), could be next. That was on the 19th July so she has been trained 6 weeks, specifically for this race.
The ground is described as Heavy but tomorrow is a decent day so should dry out too soft ground. It is probably not ideal given she is a slick mover who looks suited to better ground, but she is bred to get further and with this race likely to be a 1m test, rather than the official 7f, I think it goes in her further.
I think POMELO could be a group 1 horse in the making and she is going to improve again from her last run, where she didn’t come out of 1st gear. I make her the 6/4 favourite so can still see value left in the price. WIN.
