2:35 Wincanton
SLATE HOUSE 8/1 generally – 0.5 POINTS E/W
SLATE HOUSE has two entries tomorrow at Wincanton and Kempton but with the trainer having a horse entered at Kempton, I believe he will come to this race. I also think he has a better chance in this race as for me this is the easier race.
Last season he was a Grade 1 winner at Kempton in the Kauto Star Novice Chase and although he has gone a bit downhill since, it has been in some very good races. His last race was in the Paddy Power Gold Cup when pulled up. He has since gone for a wind operation, just 3 days after the Paddy Power Gold Cup clearly the reason why he was below par.
SLATE HOUSE went for a wind operation back in June 2019 and following that tweak he went on a run of 3 wins from 4 starts, which would have been 4 from 4 but for a fall in the 2019 Paddy Power Gold Cup.
I just wonder if this recent tweak to his wind will again bring out improvement. SLATE HOUSE is down to a handicap mark of 150 which is very workable given his form of last season. He will love the ground and with Jonjo O’Neill Jnr in the saddle he has to go close. E/W.
3:30 Kempton
SOLO 20/1 generally – 0.5 POINTS E/W (6 places, 1/5 odds)
POLISH 18/1 generally – 0.5 POINTS E/W (6 places, 1/5 odds)
AMOUR DU NUIT 11/1 generally – 0.5 POINTS E/W (6 places, 1/5 odds)
We have 3 selections in this race all at a nice price. With 6 places on offer it is worth playing them against the field. It worked over the Christmas period with a 25/1 winner in Monte Cristo. These types of races are the ones I love picking apart.
SOLO was the next coming after winning the Adonis Hurdle last February by a massive 13 lengths. The Adonis is run at this very course so we already know he loves it around here. Things haven’t quite worked out for him since but I still think he could turn out to be very good. Paul Nicholls said after winning the Adonis he strikes me as being in the model of Master Minded and you don’t liken him with a horse like that if you don’t think they have serious ability. His season started on a mark of 149 and he is now down 5lb to a mark of 144. He will be learning all the time and if he is to get back on track, the very course he made his impressive debut at, could light that spark again. At a huge price it is worth taking a chance especially with Harry Cobden taking the ride and the step up in trip could really be the key. E/W.
Another horse who is a big price is POLISH trained by Fergal O’Brien. You know with this horse the faster they go the better, as he will be staying on late in the race. Connor Brace takes the ride and claims 3lb off his back, bringing his mark down to 127. I think that is a decent mark for a horse who is very consistent. He rarely runs a bad race and his last two starts have been in decent novice company. His last start was when 3rd to Does He Know at Cheltenham in November, only beaten 8 lengths, getting 3lb from the favourite. That horse is now rated 143 which shows you how well in POLISH could be on a mark of 127. POLISH has also run a nice race at Kempton in a similar race last season, finishing 4th of 17 to Downtown Getaway over the same distance. E/W.
AMOUR DE NUIT stands out a mile with the talented Kevin Brogan in the saddle claiming 5lb off his back. The Paul Nicholls trained horse came back from a 617 day layoff to win at Plumpton 2 months ago. He then followed it up with a very good 2nd to Flash Of Steel at Newbury last month, off a mark of 140. He is up to 142 for today’s race but with the claim of 5lb, it means he runs off 137 which was the mark of his first run this season. He is a very good horse on his day who jumps and travels through races. Another horse who will love the fast pace they are going to go so he can travel into the race. Overpriced and has to make the frame. E/W.
Good Luck
