Today we give out two free tips at Kempton, chosen at random from 4 races we have sent tips out in:
3:35 Kempton
BLACK CORTON 9/1 generally – 0.5 POINTS E/W (5 places, 1/5 odds)
SOUTHFIELD STONE 11/1 generally – 0.5 POINTS E/W (5 places, 1/5 odds)
We are sticking with trainer Paul Nicholls here and two horses who love it around Kempton and both are better on decent ground.
BLACK CORTON has been to Kempton 5 times with his form reading 12122. He was also 2nd in this race last year behind another of today’s runners in Mister Malarky. This time around he meets that same horse on 9lb better terms and is 1lb lower in the handicap on a mark of 158.
BLACK CORTON has run 3 times this season and although he has not been his usual consistent self, the return to better ground should put a spring in his step. For me this is his Gold Cup and a race they would have targeted all season, after finishing 2nd in the race last year.
Paul Nicholls knows how to get one right for the day and I am expecting a big run from BLACK CORTON with Bryony Frost controlling things from the front. She is top class on front runners and her sectionals are near perfect most of the time. E/W.
SOUTHFIELD STONE is only an 8 year old and could still have more to give on a mark of 143, especially on good ground. He is a horse who just like Black Corton, loves it around Kempton, with his form reading 121 from 3 starts at the course, although one was a National Hunt Flat Race so you can’t really read into that. He was a winner back in October when defeating Paddy Power Gold Cup winner, Coole Cody on good ground.
To me this horse is all about the ground, give him good ground and he will always be thereabouts.
One thing which is a slight concern is this is his first try over 3 miles. I have always felt he would stay the 3 miles, maybe not on soft ground but certainly on this good ground he will encounter.
With Black Corton at top weight it means Harry Cobden will ride off 10st 11lb. E/W.
Good Luck
