LUCKY VEGA 20/1 generally – 1 POINT E/W (5 places Sky Bet and William Hill)
Plenty to like about LUCKY VEGA here and I think the price is an insult. He does have question marks over him about the trip but his breeding suggests he will get it. He would have grown a lot over the winter and will now be a much more physical horse this season. I thought he looked very classy last season when winning the Group 1 Keenland Stakes, travelling like a very good horse. He even had St Marks Basilica behind him that day and that horse went on to win the Racing Post Trophy. LUCKY VEGA then went back to Curragh for the Vincent O’Brien National Stakes over 7f, sent off 2/1 fav. The race was won by another of today’s runners in Thunder Moon with the favourite of today’s race, Wembley, back in 2nd, St Marks Basilica in 3rd and Mater Of The Seas in 4th. All of which run in the 2000 guineas. LUCKY VEGA came home 5th that day but you have to feel he was hard done by as he got checked in running twice and short of room. Without that he goes very very close.
His final start was at today’s course when running in the Middle Park Stakes and came home an excellent 2nd to Supremacy over 6f. That form is excellent as Clive Cox rates Supremacy as the best horse he has ever trained and LUCKY VEGA got within 1/2 length of him.
Our selection is having his first start over 1m but he looked to stay 7f quite easily last season so see no reason why he won’t stay 1m. If it is a slow run race I am sure LUCKY VEGA speed will come into play and at a huge price I am confident he is massive value.
Jessica Harrington horses have been running well all week at Punchestown and although that is over jumps, it indicates her horses are in rude health.
