DOES HE KNOW 7/2 with Paddy Power and Betfair – 1 POINT WIN
DOES HE KNOW is actually the current favourite for the Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. He is only a Novice with just 3 runs over fences under his belt, he also has his quirks so I am not convinced a big field handicap would suit a horse who is inexperienced and is not the most straightforward horse. On the other hand he is entered in the National Hunt Chase, against other novice horses over 3m 6f and I believe that race would suit better. Anyway today’s race only has 6 runners which is more to his liking and he has a big chance. He is already rated 147 so if he wins this race, he goes up to 150+ and for me you would do well to win an Ultima Handicap Chase, as a novice, off 150+. We also have to look at the other angle in that if he is favourite for such a race, he is obviously highly thought of so on that basis, he should be winning today’s race doing cartwheels. Even though I have mentioned him to be a quirky horse, he is tough and genuine and often finds off the bridle. He has had 3 runs this season over fences, winning his first 2 races at Chepstow and Cheltenham before returning to the track in November, to come home 2nd to Threeunderthrufive, who has since gone on to win a further two Grade 2 races.
I am expecting a big run here and if he wins Kim Bailey is going to have a big decision on his hands to which race he sends him to at the Cheltenham Festival. WIN.
SAINT CALVADOS 4/1 generally – 1 POINT WIN
SAINT CALVADOS will be absolutely primed for this race. He came home 3rd in the King George last time out which is obviously very respectable. I don’t think he would have won the race but a silly move by Gavin Sheehan cost him big time. He made a move 3 fences from home to go right around the outside and take up the lead. To me it was absolute amateur stuff from Gavin Sheehan as SAINT CALVADOS don’t quite stay 3 miles so needed to be held on to. Any chance he had was blown. Credit to the horse that he plugged on for 3rd. I am delighted to see Harry Cobden now taking the ride and I am delighted he is down in trip to 2m 5f. With the rain that has fallen the conditions are absolutely perfect. He has been trained all season with this race in mind and with £85k going to the winner, you can see why. This is also his 2nd run since a wind op and my long term subscribers will know, I think the second run after wind operation is the best time to catch a horse, as they have learnt they can breathe properly. SAINT CALVADOS is a horse who possibly should have won the 2020 Ryanair Chase but for an error at the final fence. He ended up going down by a neck to the talented Min. This is only his 2nd run for Paul Nicholls and I think he can get more improvement out of the horse. It is good to see his horses running well again and I think you will see Nicholls horses flying in the lead up to the Cheltenham Festival. WIN.
