GRAND NATIONAL DAY 1 FREE TIPS

1:45 Manifesto Novices Chase
WAR LORD 5/2 generally – 1.5 POINTS WIN
This race does not look like the greatest Grade 1 in the world and looking at the entries, it is a Grade 2 race at best. The favourite Pic D’Orhy has had a solid season and has looked good but I think he is short enough on what he has achieved to date and if the race gets into a battle, as I expect it will, he could be vulnerable.
I am happy to side with the Arkle Chase 4th, WAR LORD, who ran a cracking race at Cheltenham but didn’t have the pace to go with the likes of Edwardstone. He did manage to finish in front of some decent horses such as Riviere D’Etel and was just outside the places.
Watching all his replays he looks to be crying out for a step up in trip and stepping up to 2m 4f around a sharp flat track like Aintree, is ideal. As is the forecast rain and on the first day of the Aintree meeting, the ground will be riding its slowest and although he doesn’t want it to be very testing, he won’t mind cut in the ground.
WAR LORD comes into this race with 3 wins under his belt this season with his only two losses coming in races against Edwardstone, one in the Arkle (Grade 1 when 4th) and one in the Henry VIII Novice Chase (Grade 1 when 2nd) at Sandown, with the likes of Third Time Lucki behind him that day.
I am expecting a bold show here and I would be surprised if he was not involved in the finish.

5:15 Mares Bumper
NAUGHTINESSE 6/1 generally – 0.5 POINTS E/W (5 places, 1/5 odds)
At first I wasn’t going to back anything in this but after going through the race in detail and checking if I had missed anything, I have decided to have an each way bet on NAUGHTINESSE. She is a very well bred Mare who is a full sister to Debece, a half sister to Don Poli and a half sister to Politesse. The Dam Dalamine obviously produces some very nice horses and NAUGHTINESSE looks to be another. She was 2nd on debut last May and then had her 2nd career start in January when winning with a bit in hand at Fairyhouse. She has not been seen since but has obviously been targeted at this race. Trainer Lorna Fowler is a shrewd operator who is part owner of this horse. I am expecting a big run from a horse they have been so patient with and that patience can be rewarded. E/W.

Good Luck
