WEST BALBOA is a horse who I think could still be ahead of the handicapper on a mark of 130. She has only had 3 career starts under rules and has plenty of progression still to come. Her form under rules reads 122 with her 2nd start being an excellent 2nd in the Grade 1 Challow Hurdle, behind Stage Star. She was then off the track for 339 days but returned with an excellent 2nd to Conquelicot at Sandown, back in December. She just got tired in the last furlong and I am sure she can come on for that run. The winner of that race has since gone on to come 2nd in a decent Mares Handicap Hurdle, franking the form in the process.
At the price and given the fact we have 6 places on offer, she is decent value. E/W.
Our 2nd selection is PETITE TONNERRE, a horse who will love the testing ground. He is now rated 141 after two good runs this season – a 3rd of 11 at Aintree in October followed by a 2nd in a decent handicap at Newbury, back in November. Although both runs were decent they were run on good ground and good to soft when his prefered ground is actually soft ground. I am expecting an improved horse on today’s heavy ground and going through his form, on soft ground it reads 111. He is unbeaten on soft ground which bodes well for us. He is very much a horse who is only going to keep getting better given he can be a bit keen and in jockey Jonjo O’Neill Jnr, we have one of the strongest jockeys in a finish on board. E/W.
