GAASSEE 15/2 generally – 0.75 POINTS E/W
We have been on GAASSEE quite a few times this season and although I thought he would go close a number of times, never once did he get the soft ground he absolutely loves. For the first time this season he gets that ground and goes down as my NAP of the day. He has a very high knee action and although his form tells he likes soft ground, it is that knee action which tells us even more about how important soft ground is to him. The closest he has got to soft ground this season was at Ascot in July, with good to soft ground, where he travelled like the winner but didn’t see out the 1m 4f effectively that day. This 1m 2f on proper soft ground is exactly what he needs and with a rating of 98, I think he has it in him to take this race at decent odds. Tom Marquand takes the ride for William Haggas, whose horses are flying at the moment. E/W.
SUMMERGHAND 10/1 generally – 0.5 POINTS E/W (6 places, 1/5 odds)
MR WAGYU 14/1 generally – 0.5 POINTS E/W (6 places, 1/5 odds)
We have 2 selections in this race.
SUMMERGHAND won this race last year for us and I think he can go close once again. He has been an absolute legend for trainer and owners, with nearly £600k prize money. You could literally write a book about the horse but all I really need to say is, he loves these big handicaps, is never far away and in his last 4 starts he has gone very close. He comes into the race in tip top shape and with the strong pace he will get, you will see him finishing fast late on to hopefully win on the line. E/W.
MR WAGYU caught my eye last time out at the Curragh when travelling powerfully but just couldn’t go through with his run on good ground. This is a horse who was 3rd in this race in 2021 off a mark of 99 and 5th in this race last year on a mark of 104. He lines up this year on a mark of 95 and surely that mark is within range. Each season he pops up with a big handicap win and so far this season he has drawn a blank, so the win is overdue. He is clearly in rude health as we saw how he travelled last time out and I think he comes into this race primed. The price is simply too big to ignore. E/W.
