1:10 Cheltenham
UNCLE BERT 10/1 generally – 0.5 POINTS E/W (5 places, 1/5 odds)
SKYTASTIC 5/1 generally – 0.5 POINTS E/W (5 places, 1/5 odds)

We have 2 selections in this race and it is a handicap race but not much separates the top weight from the bottom, in fact it is just 10lb which splits top to bottom and for most of the runners, it is just 8lb between them. That makes it quite a close handicap.

We will start with UNCLE BERT who is the highest rated in the race on a mark of 125 but we do have James Turner taking the ride and claiming a huge 10lb, bringing the mark down to 114. I watched a race 3 weeks ago when James Turner won on Equinus and I thought he was a decent conditional in the making, worth every bit his 10lb claim. He is on board a horse in UNCLE BERT, who was an impressive winner at Perth back in September. He then went to Chepstow last month for the Silver Trophy, being sent off 11/4 favourite. He ran a decent enough race that day to come home 4th of 14, travelling well throughout. The Silver Trophy is a much better race than today’s race so I can’t believe he is as big as 10/1. A course like Cheltenham should really suit and he will try to win the race from the front before hopefully powering up the hill.
Nigel Twiston Davies horses are in top class form and I actually make UNCLE BERT a 13/2 chance which gives us fantastic value. E/W.

SKYTASTIC is a horse I have marked down as a horse ahead of the handicapper. This is a horse who was purchased from the Sam Thomas yard over the summer by Ben Pauling and I think it could turn out to be a cracking buy. He lost his way over fences last season, he simply didn’t take to them but if we go back to his hurdle form and Bumper form, he was very good. He was a good winner of a novice hurdle at Ascot in February 2022 and was then sent to the Grade 1 Sefton Novice Hurdle. He didn’t feature but he was sent off as short as 11/2 which tells us he was a highly regarded horse just a few seasons ago. SKYTASTIC is just a 7 year old who now goes back over hurdles and this is a weak race compared to what he was up to just two seasons back. Ben Pauling is an excellent trainer and although his horses could be in better form, it won’t be long until they start clicking. E/W.

Good Luck
