2:30 Ascot
NOTABLE SPEECH 2/1 generally – 2 POINT WIN
I have been waiting and waiting for the ground conditions before unleashing a raised stake bet on NOTABLE SPEECH. The weather looks beautiful, the ground is drying and everything is set up perfectly for NOTABLE SPEECH. The faster the ground the better and I think our selection is in a different league than the rest of these.
His turn of foot is just too much for the opposition and I expect William Buick to wait until the final furlong before setting him for home, even inside the final half-furlong, if truth be told. He will travel, he will get plenty of cover but he needs the button to be pushed at the right time and bar any mishaps or bad luck stories, he will just fly on this ground, like a good thing.
Now you could be critical of the horse at Ascot as he has been here twice and lost both times, including in this race last year. However, I feel he is a much better horse these days. They have learned a lot about him: how he needs to be ridden, how he needs to be delivered, how much cover he needs and all the little details you learn about a horse over time. Bottomline is, he is not the same horse that we saw here last year and certainly not the same horse as in 2024, he is miles better.
I think we saw that at the back end of last season when winning two Group 1 races in America, where the ground was lightning quick.
Then last time out he was an easy winner of the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury where we saw that deadly turn of foot. He was set for home probably earlier than they wanted, but he was not for catching.
More Thunder finished second that day and he lines up today. He is an improving horse but surely he is not good enough to trouble NOTABLE SPEECH.
The other Charlie Appleby runner, Opera Ballo, is interesting. However, having him in the field and setting a fast pace from the front will only help NOTABLE SPEECH, as he can be held up longer before the button is pressed. I am also confident connections and William Buick, know who the better horse is.
I am quietly confident NOTABLE SPEECH can get us off to a cracker, but I have been around long enough to know, it does not always go to plan. At the same time, the 15/8 looks decent value as if it were not for his Ascot form, he would be close to odds on. Come on NOTABLE SPEECH, get us off to a flyer. WIN.
3:40 Ascot
JAKAJARO 25/1 generally – 0.5 POINTS E/W (5 places, 1/5 odds)
This is a race that can quite often spring a surprise. We saw that last year with American Affair and also multiple times in the past.
I really think JAKAJARO is massively overpriced here, given what is going to be a lightning-quick race on fast ground.
This horse is all about speed, he will bomb out of the stalls and try to make all under Jamie Spencer.
Jamie Spencer has ridden the horse twice this season, winning both times. Last time out, Ed Greatrex stepped up to ride where JAKAJARO came home 4th in a Group 2 and so nearly snatched the race from the front. In good to soft ground, he tired late on and on softish, ground, a fast finisher often comes late.
Now back to fast ground, it is not so easy to catch a horse leading from the front, and Jamie Spencer’s return to the saddle is a huge plus.
Jamie Spencer has taken some criticism over the years, including from myself, but this season he has been top class more often than not, especially on front runners—can you believe I just said that? It is true, he is more known for his hold-up rides but it is his rides on those from the front which have caught my eye.
JAKAJARO has to improve massively to win this race but he has been very good this season and just maybe at the age of 5, he is on the up, which can happen for sprinters quite often.
He is drawn in 23 which is where I think the draw bias will come from. He goes from the front, so he is guaranteed the rail and although I expect him to tire inside the last furlong, that rail is going to be worth its weight in gold.
I am hoping for a place at a huge price but these sprints can throw up big-priced winners and my gut is telling me JAKAJARO will not be far away. E/W.
