BOLD PLAN 8/1 with Paddy Power and Bet Victor – 0.5 POINTS E/W (5 places, 1/5 odds)
COOLANLY 14/1 with Ladbrokes and Coral – 0.5 POINTS E/W (5 places, 1/5 odds)
The ground is going to catch so many of these out but the two we are on should have no problems in the ground and both are very talented.
BOLD PLAN had a good season last year and didn’t finish out of the frame in 4 starts. Once he ran on soft and heavy ground on his last two starts of the season, he really came into his own. On his penultimate start BOLD PLAN beat the talented Southfield Stone who defeated Angels Breath on his next start, after being beat by Bold Plan. He then ran in a very competitive handicap hurdle at Uttoxeter, finishing 2nd of 18 on heavy ground. He was only a novice so that performance gets a lot of credit from me. He has had the summer off and would have matured a lot and has already shown he can compete in big handicap race in testing ground. He is rated 132 by the handicapper but I think he could be a tad better than that and given how patient connections have been with him, it could pay for them. He is a very good jumper of a hurdle and this season you should see him at his peak. Adam Wedge knows the horse well and I think he will go very close. E/W.
COOLANLY was well fancied for the Persian War Novice Hurdle at Chepstow last season but was a faller early on. He was sent off 5/2 favourite that day and that is a Grade 2 race. He made amends on his next start with a convincing win at Cheltenham, beating a good horse in Pym. He went on to run some nice races at the Cheltenham Festival and Aintree with a 5th of 24 in the Martin Pipe Hanidcap and 7th of 21 to Aux Ptits Soins at Aintree. I know connections like this horse a lot giving I went to a stable visit last season at Fergal O’Briens yard. He is also by Flemensfirth who’s horse love the mud. He is rated 136 by the handicapper but I feel he could be treated lightly on that mark and possibly a mid 140 horse on his day. Paddy Brennan was on board when winning at Cheltenham last year so he knows the horse well and he could run a nice race at a very good price. E/W.
Main Dangers
Ballyandy is the class act but off top weight on his first start of the season, he could bump into an improving type.
Zanza is a big danger but I remember Philip Hobbs saying he was a better horse on better ground last season. This ground should be against him.
