SANTIAGO 11/4 generally – 1.5 POINTS WIN
BERKSHIRE ROCOO 33/1 generally – 0.5 POINTS E/W
I have said for 3 1/2 months now that SANTIAGO would win the St Leger. Since he won at Royal Ascot an then the Irish Derby, I have been committed to SANTIAGO and nothing is changing my mind.
He has every attribute needed to win a race like this and trainer Aiden O’Brien has had this race in mind for a long long time. He has been laid out for the race. His first start the season as a 3 year old was at Ascot back in June, when winning the Queens Vase. He didn’t just win either he bolted up, beating another of todays runners, Berkshire Rocco, by 3 lengths and the 3rd a further 9 lengths back. It was a performance which screamed St Leger.
He then went for the Irish Derby just 9 days later over 1m 4f, a drop back in distance and won, although not convincingly, he dug deep and pulled out all the stops that would would expect from a stayer.
His final start, Aiden O’Brien decided he was good enough to try and take on Stradavarius, getting over a stone in weight. He came home 3rd, beaten just two lengths and given he was a 3 year old, taking on older horses, I thought it was an excellent effort over an extreme trip of 2m.
That was 6 weeks ago and it would have put him spot on for this race. The drop back to 1m 6f will obviously help at his age and he still has improvement to come. You would have to be surprised if he couldn’t get involved in the finish. WIN.
I have also put BERKSHIRE ROCCO up as an E/W bet as he is way overpriced at 33/1. That price is just ridiculous. He was just 2 lengths off Santiago at Royal Ascot yet he is 11/4 and BERKSHIRE ROCCO is 33/1. It just doesn’t make sense.
BERKSHIRE ROCCO has had 3 runs this season and has also been laid out for the race. He was 2nd to English King on his first start of the season and then went to the above described race at Royal Ascot, coming home 2nd to today’s joint favourite.
His final start came at York in the group 2 Voltigeur Stakes when 4th to today’s other joint favourite, Pyledriver. BERKSHIRE ROCCO was only 1 length off 2nd that day and I believe he will be a better horse over today’s further trip of 1m 6f.
He is never a 33/1 shot and the bookies need their heads testing. E/W.
