PRESENTING PERCY 6/1 generally – 1 POINT WIN
SAMCRO 12/1 generally – 0.5 POINTS E/W (4 places, 1/5 odds)
We have two selections in this race.
All the rage is Minella Indo and I am a big fan of the horse but given how short he is, I can see plenty of value elsewhere.
PRESENTING PERCY is also a horse who I have always loved and he has given us some great profit over the years, including at two Cheltenham Festivals. He was the second coming after winning the RSA in 2018 but the next season he was given just one run before the Cheltenham Gold Cup and then flopped in the Gold Cup itself. Last season he ran some nice races but never looked the horse he once was. His trainer was then Patrick Kelly who did a great job but let’s face it, he is no Gordon Elliott. PRESENTING PERCY changed trainer for this season and is now trained by Gordon Elliott. Although the horse is now a 9 year old I still believe he has unfinished business and Elliott is the man who can get even more improvement out of the horse. He was back to his best last time out when winning at Thurles, beating 2 excellent horses in Kemboy and Monalee. Now he is with a different trainer I think this could be his season and he should give Minella Indo plenty to think about. WIN.
I have always thought of SAMCRO as a 3 miler ever since he won the Neptune Novice Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in 2018, over 2m 5f. It was to my surprise that they went down the 2 mile route and it was only last season he was stepped up to 2m 4f. He went to the Cheltenham Festival and won the Marsh Novice Chase by a nose. Even then he was doing his best work at the end of the race, as if a step up in trip would be needed. A horse who has won at two Cheltenham Festivals but still a horse who plenty feel has not fulfilled his potential. Quite ironic really as how many horses can say they have won 2 grade 1s at the Cheltenham Festival. Still I kind of agree and had they not gone down in trip, he could have gone on to better things. As an 8 year old he is still relatively young and finally the penny has dropped to step him up in trip. Hopefully my intuition is right and this 3 miles is going to be the making of him. The only doubt I have in my mind is the soft ground but it is a chance worth taking. E/W.
Good Luck
