2:25 Ascot
DANNY KIRWAN 11/2 generally – 0.75 POINTS E/W (4 places, 1/5 odds)
I have no doubt that DANNY KIRWAN has been targeted at this race for many months by trainer Paul Nicholls. He is a good ground horse and this ground is right up his street. His last run came in October over course and distance when an excellent 2nd to Our Power, beaten 2 lengths. He has not been seen since as the winter ground would be too soft and they are clearly looking after his handicap mark of 136. When you plan ahead like this with a specific target and you are a trainer like Paul Nicholls, often those plans are profitable.
The horse loves it around Ascot with his form reading 21712 from 5 starts and Harry Cobden takes the ride. I am quietly confident and he goes down as one of my bets of the day. E/W.
3:00 Ascot
TOO FRIENDLY 11/1 generally – 0.5 POINTS E/W (4 places, 1/5 odds)
TOO FRIENDLY has done nothing wrong all season and is a winner waiting to happen. His form this season reads 4222 and in all 4 starts he has run some great races, none more so than at Huntingdon 9 days ago, when a neck 2nd to Sonigino. TOO FRIENDLY went into my notebook that day as although we were on the winner, I thought TOO FRIENDLY was an unlucky loser. He cruised into the race under a good Bridget Andrews ride and just couldn’t get past the game winner after the last hurdle. He is up the handicap 1lb which is absolutely fine and I am sure he can put in another good run. The fact the Skeltons are happy to run him so soon tells me they feel he is ready to win. Given how consistent he has been this season, the price is a tad overpriced. E/W.
3:18 Haydock
ONAGATHERINGSTORM 12/1 generally – 0.5 POINTS E/W (4 places Sky Bet and UniBet)
A Pertemps Hurdle qualifier and who needs to win to get into the race. They are clearly all out for the win with ONAGATHERINGSTORM as he has not only been for a wind operation but they are putting a tongue tie and cheek pieces on for the first time. Fergal O’Brien clearly means business and if this horse can find his old form, he has a right chance at a big price. It wasn’t that long ago he was running well in defeat to the likes of Sporting John over today’s trip. He is now rated 127 which I think is a very winnable mark.
Fergal O’Brien can get his horses fit so I am not overly concerned he has been off the track since November and I fully expect him to be involved in the finish at a nice price. E/W.
