Five Handicap National Hunt Horse To Follow 2019/2020
With the National Hunt Season just one week away the excitement is building. Everything is coming together and I don’t think I have ever been as prepared as I am now, in 11 years previously for the National Hunt Season. In those 11 years we came away with profit every single year and this season I am all out to reach our target of 150 points profit.

To continue the excitement following our previous blog, National Hunt Preview, we have put together 5 horses who we think a well handicapped and can be winning of their current handicap mark.
DIDTHEYLEAVEUOUTTO
Trainer – Nick Gifford
Form – 11011590
DIDTHEYLEAVEUOUTTO sits on a handicap mark of 135 which I think he is capable of winning off. This is a horse who is closely related to the great Denman. His career started in 2017 with a win at Lingifeld and this was followed by an impressive win in a Listed Bumper at Ascot. I remember Nick Gifford saying that day that the ground was soft enough but they got away with it. The ground was described as Good To Soft that day which suggests anything Good To Soft or better will be ideal for him. After his win at Ascot it was all about the Cheltenham Festival Bumper where in the weeks leading up to the race, he was strongly fancied, giving the ground is normally on the goodish side. Unfortunately the ground went against him with the 2017 Cheltenham Festival turning up soft. He did however travel strongly in the race but was beaten coming up the hill, obviously with the tacky ground going against. That was his season done in bumpers and a year as a novice hurdler beckoned.
Last year his season got underway with a win at Fakenham at the end of October. He was then thrown in the deep end at Ascot against a quality horse in Thomas Darby. The ground was good that day and he done his best work late on to beat Thomas Darby by a head, again showing how crucial the good ground is for the horse. It is worth pointing out that Thomas Darby went on to finish 2nd in the Supreme Novice Hurdle and is now rated 151 by the handicapper.
His next run came at Kempton in a hot novice race against the likes of Mister Fisher, Thomas Darby and The Big Bite. The ground was tacky that day and he came home 5th of 6.
He headed to Ascot next for the Betfair Hurdle but again the ground was against him and he came home 9th of 16, off a handicap mark of 139. That was his season done and for me it was a season where the ground was against him apart from one run when beating Thomas Darby.
He has had one run since at Galway in August. The ground was fine that day but he was stepped up to 3 miles and he was never going to get home in my opinion. He does have a tendency to pull and over 3 miles that is a big ask if you can’t settle properly. In hindsight he should not have run in that race but at least it would have blown away the cobwebs that some horses will have, early season.
I am sure he will be dropped in trip for his next run and if it was my horse I would be looking at the Greatwood Hurdle at the Cheltenham Open meeting in November. Obviously the ground is crucial so I would advise anyone who put this horse in the their tracker, only bet if the ground is good to soft or better.
His mark of 135 is very workable given he has beaten a now rated 151 horse. Very interesting season ahead if he remains over hurdles.
SLATE HOUSE
Trainer – Colin Tizzard

You would look at his form figures and think how is this horse included but on a mark of 135, he is very well treated. I remember the first time I seen this horse at Cheltenham back in October 2017, when winnings a maiden hurdle. He is a huge horse who seemingly had the world at his feet. He won that day and this was followed up with another win, when beating Supreme Novice Hurdle winner Summerville Boy. He couldn’t produce anything afterwards as a Novice Hurdler and has not done so since over fences. In defence to the horse, he has run in a Grade 2 and Grade 1 over fences in only 4 starts, so you could say he was out of his comfort zone. His last run over fences was in the Arkle Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. He was well beaten that day but was clearly out of his depth.
This season ahead he will stay over fences and given he is on a mark of 135 he could have a big handicap chase in him. His early days suggest he has un-tapped potential and if he has a troublesome free season, he could go close in a big race, at a nice price.
WHISPERINTHEBREEZE

WHISPERINTHEBREEZE is a horse who needs good ground. When he won at Leopardstown in February, I remember Jessica Harrington saying in an interview, just how ground dependant this horse is. The ground that day was very fast good ground and he won by an easy 3 lengths, off a mark of 130 (133 UK). He then went to the Cheltenham Festival for the 4 miler but was never going to win that race on soft ground, given the trainers comments. His next start was in the Irish Grand National where he ran a mighty race for such a long way. He took them along from the 15th fence. He went to the front too soon that day and set the race up for other horses. Given a more patient ride I am sure the horse could have made the frame.
I am not sure what race but I still think on a mark of 139 and a trip of around 3 miles on good ground, you will see this horse winning next season. It could even be on a lower mark if he lost his first race but in my opinion is a horse who is tad better than his mark on his day.
CHAMPAGNE PLATINUM
Trainer – Nicky Henderson
Form – 1115
I am hoping Nicky Henderson keeps this horse over hurdles this season being only a 5 year old. His handicap mark of 138 is very workable and is another horse who could run well in the Greatwood Hurdle in November. He was a good winner of his first two starts last season and on his final start, he was sent to Punchestown to take on Klassical Dream. It was too early as this horse is still a bit babyish with lots of learning to do. He is a horse who has that raw ability and with time will improve no end. I have no doubt in mind he is better than his mark of 138 so it is a case of keeping an eye for his next big handicap start. I am sure Nicky Henderson will be hiding his cards ready throw them in with this horse. Could quite literally be a 150 horse on a mark of 138. No doubt he is a chaser in the making given his success as a pointer but would like to see them hold off from chasing, for one more year.
DEBECE
Trainer – Tim Vaughan

I have always thought this horse could be very good but he is a bit fragile which has stopped him progressing further. He is a brother to Don Poli and is a horse highly regarded by Tim Vaughan. This horse first came to my attention when winning at Newbury over hurdles in March 2017. He just kept up this relentless pace and looked a serious tool. He was then stepped up to Grade 1 company at Aintree for the the Sefton Novice Hurdle and came home a decent 3rd to the Worlds End. He had a year off the track the following season and re-appeared at Aintree in 2018. A solid run in a handicap to come home 4th after a year off, showed he still had ability. Last season he embarked on a chasing career and won two races. He wasn’t himself in a Grade 3 Handicap Chase at Aintree on his final start and ended the season on a mark of 140. I think he is a better horse than 140 on his day. I am not the trainer so not sure where they would go with this one but if someone could tell Tim Vaughan to head to the Bet Victor Gold Cup, that would be great. A horse who wants 3 miles, if they went from the front with this one, galloping all the way around, he could go close. Wherever they go though I think he could win a big one with this mark of 140.
